Before WWE SmackDown went live on Fox this past Friday night, a new concept was trotted out for the fans: WWE Speed. Based on videos making their way around social media, WWE Speed is some show or segment that includes matches with a five-minute time limit. Based on how the content is being filmed, it appears that it is intended to be used for broadcast or streaming later.
In the most notable video making the rounds, as seen above, Axiom can be seen taking on Cedric Alexander. Fightful reports that Bronson Reed versus Nathan Frazer were also filmed, with Frazer picking up the victory. It sounds as if Corey Graves and Kevin Patrick served as the commentators.
The timing of the new concept being tried out is interesting. Currently, WWE has yet to lock down the TV rights for WWE Raw, and selling their content has become a priority for the company. With short-form content becoming a cash cow on various social media and streaming platforms, it is possible WWE Speed could be used as some kind of shoulder content to a bigger deal. This quick content would also be helpful on WWE’s social media platforms like TikTok and Snapchat.
