Who’s next? Maybe no one as WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg is reportedly no longer with the company.
Fightful reports that Goldberg’s WWE contract expired at the end of 2022 and a new deal to renew or extend it could not be reached. That means that the former WWE and WCW World Champion has officially been a free agent for a few months now.
It may feel like Goldberg’s been free of the company longer than that, however, since his last WWE match took place back in February of last year at WWE Elimination Chamber in Saudi Arabia. On the show, Goldberg faced off against Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship in what would be his final match for the company. Of course, Goldberg was unsuccessful in his attempt to claim gold and Reigns would go on to unify both of WWE’s top titles when he defeated Brock Lesnar at WWE WrestleMania 38.
Goldberg’s tenure with WWE began in 2003 after a brief run in All-Japan Pro Wrestling following the demise of WCW. WWE immediately went all in on WCW’s former top draw, entering him into a feud with The Rock before having him cleanly defeat The Great One in his PPV debut match.
Despite the initial push, Goldberg’s first WWE run came to a controversial end a year later at WrestleMania XX when he and Brock Lesnar faced off in a match where most of the crowd knew each man would be leaving the company. The fans felt betrayed by two of WWE’s biggest stars leaving and proceeded to loudly boo the bout. Goldberg was able to defeat Lesnar but his celebration was short-lived, as guest referee “Stone Cold” Steve Austin laid him out with a stunner to the delight of everyone.
Goldberg returned to WWE in 2016 and has gone on to be a somewhat regular presence for the promotion since. He has won the WWE Universal Championship twice, WWE Championship once, and was inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame in 2018.
