Stunningly, Bianca Belair overcame a mid-match “injury” and two-on-one odds to capture the WWE Women’s Championship in a triple-threat match against Charlotte Flair and then-champ Auska at SummerSlam. The victory came after Charlotte had placed Belair in a Figure Eight, only to have Asuka spit mist in her face. As Charlotte lay in agony, with the Figure Eight still being applied, Belair grabbed Asuka from out of nowhere into a cradle for the pin.
Moments after retaining her championship, however, IYO SKY’s music hit, and she rushed to the ring with her Money In The Bank briefcase. Immediately after hitting the ring, she handed the briefcase to the referee and demanded the bell be rung and the match begin. SKY got her wish; as Belair laid out of it on the ground, the bell was rung, and SKY hit her signature moonsault from the top rope for the win.
Following her victory, Bayley and Dakota Kai, her fellow DAMAGE CTRL stablemates, joined her for a celebration in the ring. This was the first time Kai had been seen on WWE TV since going down with an ACL tear earlier this year. It is interesting to note that Bayley did not interfere or try to claim the win as her own in any way, considering she has been speaking as if she also holds the briefcase since SKY won it in London.
Earlier in the night, Shayna Baszler defeated Ronda Rousey in an MMA Rules match, the only other women’s match on the SummerSlam card. It also, possibly, served as Rousey’s final match with the promotion. Unlike the match between the two former UFC stars, the triple threat had the crowd on their feet, and SKY’s surprise cash-in received a huge reaction.
