WWE NXT saw its highest viewership in nearly three years this past Tuesday night, and it most likely had to do with some big names that were gracing the show. Mustafa Ali served as the special referee in an NXT North American Championship match that saw Wes Lee retain over Tyler Bate, Cora Jade picked up a win over Dana Brooke, and in the main event, Seth “Freaking” Rollins defeated Bron Breakker to keep the WWE World Heavyweight Championship around his waste.
Rollins versus Breakker was such a hit that the show garnered nearly a million viewers for the match’s overrun, which is something WWE officials are indeed noting. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that there are plans for more WWE main roster talent to make their way to the black and gold brand, in line with previous reports regarding Ali and Baron Corbin popping up on the show.
One exciting name that is, apparently, being bandied about to appear on WWE NXT TV is WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Ronda Rousey. Rousey and her tag team partner, Shayna Baszler, were victorious the past Friday night on Smackdown against former WWE NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Isla Dawn and Alba Fyre, officially unifying the two sets of titles. The two MMA shooters may appear in NXT to give the women a rematch or take on other female tag teams in the division.
Whether it’s Rousey, Baszler, or others, more big names will be gracing Tuesday nights on USA shortly. Internally, the Rollins and Breakker match, and the subsequent viewership that came along with it, is being seen as an enormous success, and rightfully so. With that in mind, it’s best not to try and fix what isn’t broken, so expect Nick Khan to continue to try and boost NXT numbers with more one-offs like this.
