Last month, Tony Khan’s Ring of Honor presented its big Supercard of Honor event. The main event saw Claudio Castagnoli successfully defend his ROH World Championship against Eddie Kingston, as well as a barn burner of an opener between El Hijo de Vikingo and Komander. In general, under Khan’s ownership, ROH has continued to put on stellar three-hour PPVs that have been easy to digest.
Outside of Ring of Honor’s PPV business is also their renewed weekly series, now available for fans via Honor Club. The show has been a showcase for legendary ROH names like Samoa Joe and Christopher Daniels, while also mixing in young talent like Blake Christian and Tony Deppen. It has also featured a variety of regular talent from the waning days of Sinclair’s ownership, like Shane Taylor and former ROH World Champion Matt Taven.
While it has been confirmed that Taven has signed a full-time contract with ROH and AEW, the same cannot be said for Taylor and others. Fightful reports that despite Taylor’s regular ROH appearances recently, and wins, the big man has not signed a full-time ROH contract and is still a free agent. Other ROH veterans like Rhett Titus, Cheeseburger, and LSG all appear to be free agents for the time being, as well.
There may be a good reason for Khan not rushing to sign many ROH talents to contracts at the moment. Currently, Khan is in negotiations with Warner Brothers Discovery in regard to a new TV rights deal for AEW. Things do look promising in that regard, as WBD appears poised to launch another AEW show on one of its platforms, Collision, likely on TNT. However, as it is currently being reported, ROH is not part of the new deal that Khan is putting together with the media giant.
While ROH may not be cashing in on a TV rights deal, it still serves a valuable purpose to Khan and will likely see more names signed as time goes on. For example, if Khan had not purchased ROH, he would not have had a space to work with The Briscoe Brothers to deliver the insane tag team matches we saw them compete in against FTR. Following Jay’s untimely passing, Mark being in Khan’s orbit opened the door for him to sign with AEW full-time, and continue on his journey in the business.
