This past Friday night on WWE SmackDown, WWE NXT star Carmelo Hayes faced off against Austin Theory. The two men wrestled a few weeks prior, but the contest had to be ended early after the two men accidentally suffered facial contusions when a move went wrong. With the help of distractions by Grayson Waller and a roll-up that included a handful of tights, Theory picked up the victory in their rematch. After the win, Waller and Theory began to beat down Hayes until fellow WWE NXT Star Trick Williams ran in for the save as the crowd screamed, “Whoop That Trick!”
Haus of Wrestling has learned from a tenured WWE source that the WWE SmackDown creative team was blown away by the reaction Williams got. The belief among some influential people in the company now is that Williams has “future WrestleMania main eventer potential.”
A top WWE star that we spoke to about Williams complimented the NXT star’s “great attitude and skill set that he’s cultivating.” They added that they foresee “nothing but positives for him.”
Williams will be pushed hard this week, as he has two big matches on the horizon. Tonight, on WWE NXT, he will team with Hayes in a Dusty Rhodes Classic semi-final match against the LWO. If Williams and Hayes are successful, they will advance to the finals this Sunday night at Vengeance Day and will take on Baron Corbin and Bron Breakker.
As we noted last night in a report about Bron Breakker’s WWE status, we had not heard that WWE was ready to move him to the main roster full-time yet. One WWE source did compliment Breakker on cutting a “hell of a promo” after the WWE Royal Rumble about how the main roster was now his home. Earlier today, Shawn Michaels confirmed to the Battleground podcast that Breakker’s time in WWE NXT is not yet done.
Also, on tonight’s show, Williams will go face-to-face with the man he will challenge for the WWE NXT Championship, also this Sunday at Vengeance Day, Ilja Dragunov. Williams won the Men’s Iron Survivor Challenge match at Deadline to earn the opportunity and was seen starring down Dragunov at the end of the premium live event. Near Williams for the staredown was Hayes, who was slinking just behind him. Tension has been teased ever since Hayes and Williams were attacked backstage by an unknown assailant or assailants, and it is possible the payoff to that angle is coming this week, too.
