Rey Mysterio is currently out of WWE action recovering from surgery but is expected back in time for the Royal Rumble later this month. When he returns, he is likely to feud with fellow LWO member Santos Escobar, who attacked him on SmackDown to take him out of storylines so he could take care of himself. Prior to being taken off WWE TV, Mysterio was also occasionally seen in the corner of Dragon Lee in WWE NXT, who defeated his son, Dominik, to become North American Champion. Last night on WWE NXT, without Rey in his corner, Lee lost the title to NXT Breakout Tournament winner Oba Femi.
On Baker’s Bantering Podcast, Rey was asked how he felt when Lee defeated Dominik to become WWE NXT North American Champion.
“This is what I see in Dragon Lee, and I said it at Deadline; I see a lot of young me in Dragon Lee,” he began. “He’s very unique with his style. Of course, he carries a tradition of lucha libre, which is the mask. And the mask represents something way beyond just putting on a mask. It transforms you; it gives you a certain power of representation to our culture, of representation to our sport.
“But overall, he has the heart and determination to go in the ring and put it all on the line. And I’ve seen that every time he stepped in the ring. So I endorse myself, Dragon Lee, to be the next Superstar within WWE that’s a luchador. It’s been, it’s been quite a while. I mean, we’ve had several luchadors in WWE that have been given opportunities but Dragon Lee is captivating, and he’s taking full advantage of this opportunity. He already beat Dominik for the North American title. So you can only see that he’s going very big.”
