At UFC 296, UFC Welterweight Champion Leon Edwards easily dispatched obnoxious, loud-mouthed fighter Colby Covington. It was a satisfying victory for not just the champ but also those who wanted to see Covington destroyed. Covington’s heel-styled presentation often has fans and pundits opining that he would find himself comfortable in the confines of WWE, which could happen in the future now that the sports entertainment juggernaut has merged with UFC to form TKO Group Holdings. If he does, he will join a short list of athletes who have fought in both WWE and UFC, including Brock Lesnar, Ken Shamrock, Ronda Rousey, and CM Punk.
In a new interview with Sports Illustrated, Edwards excitedly let everyone know what match he would like to see Punk have at WrestleMania now that he has returned to WWE.
“I want Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk,” said Edwards. “That’s what I want to see.”
Punk surprised the pro wrestling world when he returned to WWE at Survivor Series last month after nearly a decade away from the promotion. Despite his rough go of things in All Elite Wrestling, Punk received a thunderous ovation and has been a huge merchandise seller for the company.
“I’m excited that Punk is back,” Edwards continued. “Those are my son’s favorites, so they’re my favorites, too.”
A collision between Punk and Reigns was almost immediately teased by The Second City Savior once he was back with WWE. On Raw the Monday after Survivor Series, Punk delivered his first comments to WWE fans and noted that it was a “wise man” who advised him to leave the company and come back stronger. Of course, there is only one wise man in WWE, and that is Paul Heyman.
If Punk and Reigns do face off at WrestleMania, Edwards made it clear he hopes The Bloodline tastes victory.
“I want Roman to win,” he concluded.
