WWE heads back to Madison Square Garden on December 26 for their annual day-after-Christmas WWE live event at the historic venue. CM Punk has already been announced for the show and will compete in his first match since returning to the company, taking on “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio. The big event traditionally features some of the most notable names in the company, and along with Punk, fans will also be treated to Cody Rhodes and others.
In an interview on 98.7 ESPN, Rhodes revealed who he will be facing on the big show and a special stipulation for the match.
“There’s something special I wanted to add to the match, and as of today, the top brass, the higher-ups have confirmed this is what is going to happen,” he began. “At the Madison Square Garden holidays tour the day after Christmas, not only will I be wrestling Shinsuke Nakamura, but it will be in a Bull Rope Match, and that blows my heart up.
“It’s not only a match that my family has perhaps made famous to a degree, but also it’s the original Bull Rope that we’ve had amongst Dusty, Dustin, and myself. So, looking forward to the holiday tour: Shinsuke Nakamura versus Cody Rhodes. First time ever Bull Rope Match.”
Rhodes and Nakamura have been at odds with one another on WWE Raw for weeks. Their main event match this past Monday night on WWE Raw ended in a disqualification after Nakamura spewed red mist into Rhodes’ eyes.
Rhodes’ father, WWE Hall of Fame inductee Dusty Rhodes, was synonymous with the Bull Rope Match. There were rumors the stipulation would be revived for Rhodes’ feud with Brock Lesnar earlier this year, but the gimmick match never manifested. On the June 4, 2021 episode of AEW Rampage, Cody’s brother, Dustin, successfully defeated Nick Comarato in a Bull Rope Match.
