This past Friday night on WWE SmackDown, Rey Mysterio was attacked by LWO stablemate Santos Escobar. The attack came on the heels of his WWE United States Championship loss to Logan Paul at Crown Jewel, which fellow LWO member Carlito blamed Escobar for. Earlier today, Mysterio announced on social media that he has undergone successful knee surgery in Birmingham, which seems to be the reason he was attacked and taken off TV.
Haus of Wrestling has learned that Mysterio has been working through a torn meniscus for about three months. The injury has slowly worsened, so he agreed to lose the WWE United States Championship to Paul and participate in the beatdown angle before heading off for his knee operation. He is expected to be out of action for around six to eight weeks while he recovers and will likely resume his feud with Escobar when he returns.
If everything goes to plan, that timeline will allow Mysterio to be available for the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 40 season. At WrestleMania 39, Rey was victorious over his son Dominik in singles action. Since then, the two have primarily stayed apart, with Rey helping to elevate the LWO on SmackDown and Dominik working with The Judgment Day on Raw. Rey appeared in WWE NXT earlier this year, seconding Dragon Lee when he unsuccessfully took on Dominik for the WWE NXT North American Championship.
