This past weekend, CM Punk made his first broadcast appearance since his termination from AEW earlier this month. The former AEW World Champion appeared as a co-commentator for Cage Fighting Fury Championship at their 125th event, a position he has maintained since late 2018. Almost as soon as Punk first appeared on-screen, his commentary partner John Morgan made reference to the statement AEW released announcing Punk’s termination.
“It is time for CFFC 125, my name is John Morgan and with me tonight once again: Look who I ran into backstage, he is back, might I add with cause, CM Punk,” Morgan exclaimed. As the two rounded out the event’s card, Morgan joked about them having “some things to talk about” leading to Punk sarcastically asking, “what do you want to talk about?” The duo shared a laugh as Morgan responded in jovial kind questioning, “what could it be?”
Later in the broadcast, the two once again made light of Punk’s unceremonious AEW exit and turned their focus to Tony Khan’s AEW Collision address where he claimed to have feared for his safety during an incident involving Punk at AEW All In: London.
“They see CM Punk in the house, they all get nervous,” John Morgan started. “No, no. Well, they might for different reasons,” Punk responded. “Some of them fear for their lives, so I’ve heard!” Morgan claimed. “Depending on what you’re reading, I don’t know,” Punk replied as they both shared a laugh again.
Punk made his final AEW appearance at AEW All In where he successfully defended his “Real” World Championship against Samoa Joe. Prior to the bout, Punk got into a backstage altercation with Jack Perry which led to both men being suspended from the promotion. Subsequently, Tony Khan and AEW released a joint statement on September 2nd announcing that Punk had been terminated from the company with cause following the incident.
