Next Wednesday on AEW Dynamite, Jon Moxley will defend the AEW International Championship against Rey Fenix. Moxley and the rest of the Blackpool Combat Club have found themselves at odds with Fenix and his brother, Penta El Zero Miedo, in the latter half of the summer. Moxley will now put his title on the line at the AEW Grand Slam special, taking place at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York.
Moxley and Fenix last met in singles action on the August 23 edition of Dynamite, days ahead of AEW All In. In that match, Moxley came out on top, putting Fenix out with a sleeper hold. This time, the stakes will be higher with the title on the line. Though he’s been in the promotion for the entirety of its existence, Fenix has yet to win singles gold in AEW. He has held both the AEW World Tag Team Championship as well as the AEW World Trios Championship, however, and has put on a number of memorable singles matches against the likes of Kenny Omega, Nick Jackson, and Lance Archer over the last few years.
Since defeating Orange Cassidy for the International Championship at AEW All Out, Moxley has defended against AR Fox, Action Andretti, and Big Bill. That last match opened up tonight’s Dynamite, with Moxley picking up the win in his hometown. Following the bout, Moxley and his BCC compatriots brawled with Big Bill and Ricky Starks, setting up a tag match between Starks and Big Bill against Bryan Danielson and Claudio Castagnoli of the BCC this Saturday on AEW Collision. Like Moxley, Castagnoli will be defending his title next week on Dynamite. He’ll put the Ring of Honor World Championship on the line against Eddie Kingston and his NJPW Strong Openweight Championship.
