This past Saturday night, Roman Reigns successfully defended his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against his cousin, Jey Uso. The victory was not without controversy, as Jimmy Uso returned to action, blindsiding his brother from behind and helping Reigns retain not just his championship but also the title of Tribal Chief. It was once again a wild match for the Anao’i family, and it sounds like it took a toll on one of the men involved.
Wrestling Observer reports that Reigns was injured early on in the bout, the longest of his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship run, although no specifics were given on what the injury is. At the moment, Reigns has been announced for a segment on Smackdown this Friday night that will see Jimmy return to the Island of Relevancy after proving his loyalty at SummerSlam. Beyond this announced appearance, there seems to be a lot of speculation about how active Reigns’ WWE schedule will be for the rest of the year.
Fightful confirmed the Observer’s report about the injury happening early in the match but was also scarce on details about how it occurred. They did clarify that Reigns is still slated for his “internally scheduled appearances” but noted that could always change. Some members of the WWE Smackdown creative team were unaware that the injury had even occurred until word of it started breaking today, and no changes to creative have been made at this time.
WWE SummerSlam was the highest-grossing non-WrestleMania premium live event in the history of the company, on top of being the most-watched SummerSlam of all time, due in no small part to interest in The Bloodline. However, it will be interesting to see if The Bloodline continues to hold up in viewership this Friday night. While many enjoyed the main event, others rolled their eyes at yet another member of The Bloodline turning on a member of their family.
