Despite a loss to Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair this past Friday night on Smackdown, things have looked relatively bright for the newly formed tag team of Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville. A few weeks ago on WWE Monday Night Raw, the duo shocked the world when they defeated Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. While their match against Flair and Belair was non-title, the win by the former Women’s Champions looked to set up a rematch between the four talented female stars, meaning more screentime for all involved.
Unfortunately, TMZ reports that during that tag match last Friday, Deville suffered a torn ACL. She is now set to undergo a procedure tomorrow to fix the issue, but there is no timeline for her return to in-ring action. Apparently, WWE will be addressing the issue on tonight’s post-SummerSlam edition of Raw.
It has been an interesting road for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships since WWE WrestleMania 39. They were not formally defended on WWE’s biggest show of the year, but the then-title holders, Becky Lynch and Lita competed in six-woman action on the show. On the Raw after Mania, Lita was conspicuously absent with an injury, so a game Stratus stepped in to help Lynch defend her titles. The duo went on to lose to Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez, with Stratus turning on Lynch after the match, kick-starting their still ongoing feud.
From there, Rodriquez and Morgan held the titles for a little over a month before Morgan suffered a shoulder injury, and the titles were vacated. New champions were decided on Raw two weeks later when Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler won a fatal four-way match. Not long after, Rousey and Baszler defeated then-WWE NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn to unify both sets of belts.
Rodriquez and a healthy Liv Morgan returned to reclaim their titles at WWE Money In The Bank last month and were successful after Baszler turned on Rousey, eventually leading to their WWE SummerSlam match this past weekend. During Rodriquez and Morgan’s latest run, Morgan reportedly suffered another shoulder injury that was said not to be serious. However, she and Rodriguez still lost their titles to Green and Deville after a short sixteen-day run.
Now, after only twenty-one days, it looks like the WWE Women’s Championship is at its latest crossroad. Will Green move forward with a new partner? Or will she be stripped of the belts in order to crown new champions? Tune in and find out!
