Earlier this week, news broke that The Elite, Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, and “Hangman” Adam Page had all signed new multi-year contract extensions with AEW. In the time since, it has also been reported that the deal will see The Young Bucks become the highest-paid tag team in pro wrestling history, according to their legendary pro wrestling agent, Barry Bloom. Prior to the group’s decision to stay with All Elite Wrestling, there had been speculation that due, in part, to issues with CM Punk, The Elite could jump ship to WWE, much like Cody Rhodes did over a year ago.
At today’s WWE SummerSlam Service Experience, Rhodes took questions from the media as part of a scrum. During the scrum, I asked him how he felt about The Elite’s decision to re-sign with Tony Khan’s promotion rather than join him in WWE.
“I’m very happy when any wrestler or Superstar gets paid,” he said. “I don’t want to sound carny or hacky but to know that your peers and people who take the bumps and go through all this and have that type of the physical struggle that comes with this gig, to know they’re getting paid is really exciting. I am over the moon that that group did what they did because, as Nick Jackson said, I believe they’ve made some NBA money off of it.
“I’m honestly just really happy for them. I am. I would have loved to have seen them again. But, you know, I’m very happy with the choices they made, and that schedule is a little different. This gig is, this particular gig at WWE, it’s a different type of personality that maybe fits me a little bit more. Yeah, but very happy for him.”
Cody Rhodes’ full WWE SummerSlam Service Experience media scrum will be available shortly on the Haus of Wrestling YouTube channel.
