On the WWE Raw after WrestleMania 39, Cody Rhodes was set to team with Brock Lesnar against The Bloodline’s Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa. Rhodes had just come off a heartbreaking main event loss the night before and was looking to get some measure of revenge on Reigns after so much interference in their big bout. Before the match could even take place, The Beast blindsided Rhodes with an F5 and proceeded to beat him down around the ring, as The Bloodline slowly slinked away. The two box office attractions have been at each other’s throats ever since.
At WWE Backlash, Rhodes was victorious in the first match between the two men. Lesnar, undeterred, once again set about attacking The American Nightmare whenever he could, demanding that the former AEW EVP give him a fight at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia. The week before the rematch was set to take place, Lesnar once again attacked Rhodes, slamming a beer keg into his arm as it rest against a steel garage door. In the storyline, Rhodes’ arm was broken, and being who he is, he decided to press on with the match, anyway.
The “broken” arm was immediately targeted by Lesnar in the Saudi desert, leading to Rhodes passing out in pain as the former UFC Champion locked in his deadly Kimura Lock. The win leaves Rhodes and Lesnar at one and one when it comes to their feud, with a rubber match seemingly on the horizon.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting the third match in the Rhodes and Lesnar trilogy is set to be one of the main events for WWE SummerSlam in Detroit on August 5. The match could see elevated levels of brutality since it appears a Bull Rope Match is being considered for the occasion. It was noted that several ideas for the bout are being discussed, so it is not official that the two will compete in a Bull Rope Match.
It is interesting to note that the last major televised Bullrope Match went down in AEW and saw Cody’s brother, Dustin, take on Nick Comoroto on a special Friday Night Dynamite episode. Dustin was able to pick up the victory over The Factory member, and if Cody is being heated up for another match against Reigns, which has been rumored, it’s likely he’ll find himself victorious in this gimmick match, just like his brother.
