Just as things were starting to look up for Liv Morgan, and her WWE Tag Team Championship partner, Raquel Rodriguez, it appears the plucky, young star is dealing with a more serious injury than initially believed. Fightful is reporting that Morgan is expected to “at least be sidelined through the summer.”
It is already known that Morgan is dealing with an injury, as WWE authority figure Adam Pearce has confirmed on TV. Elsewhere, reports have emerged that Morgan suffered a shoulder injury during her tag team title defense against Dakota Kai and IYO SKY on the May 12 episode of Smackdown. Following her injury, Morgan pressed on with the match only for Kai to get injured, reportedly tearing her ACL, while trying to finish the match safely with the champion.
In the wake of Morgan’s injury, it was decided that she and Rodriguez would be stripped of the titles and new champions will be crowned this Monday night on Raw in a fatal four-way match. Rodriguez will be allowed to choose a new partner to team with for the bout, and the other combinations include Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler, Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville, and Damage CTRL’s Bayley and IYO SKY.
Morgan and Kai are not the only female pro wrestlers to suffer injuries in recent weeks. Mercedes Mone reportedly broke her ankle this past weekend at NJPW: Resurgence in the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship tournament final match against Willow Nightingale. Following her injury, an audible appears to have been called, with Nightingale picking up the surprise win over the former Sasha Banks. Tony Khan alluded to the fact that her injury may have impacted plans they had for Forbidden Door next month.
Once Morgan does return to action, it will be interesting to see what path she takes. A return to the tag team division could be in store but with as wildly popular as Morgan has remained, it is always possible she could come back in a more prominent singles star role.
