It was a little less than a year ago that Drew McIntyre was taking center stage in WWE’s main event picture. The sword-wielding Scotsman was mere months away from a showdown with Roman Reigns at Clash at The Castle and seemingly had the wind at his back. The love from fans around McIntyre became so strong that many had convinced themselves that he would be able to dethrone Reigns at the UK’s big show but, ultimately, like the result of the WWE WrestleMania 39 main event, the fans did not get what they wanted, and The Tribal Chief stood tall.
In the wake of that loss, McIntyre has feuded and partnered with fellow UK star, Sheamus, and the two competed in a Fatal 4-Way match for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 39. Gunther retained his title that night and in the wake of the loss, McIntyre has not been seen since. Rumors have swirled about McIntyre’s WWE future, and the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter shed light on what is going on with the former WWE Champion.
According to the report, McIntyre is out of action with an injury and could return in a few weeks. At the moment, he is still under contract to WWE but it looks like he is operating under the impression that there is a good chance he will be leaving the promotion when his deal expires. With WWE short on top Raw heels at the moment, it was speculated that turning McIntyre heel to work a final program with either Seth Rollins or Cody Rhodes, who look to be in contention for the WWE World Championship, could be in the cards.
Based on a report from Fightful, it sounds like McIntyre’s contract will expire near the end of 2023.
Following McIntyre’s potential involvement in the main event picture, it was also noted that Randy Orton could be ready to return and serve as the next challenger for the title. Brock Lesnar and Omos were also listed as possible opponents in the future.
