Jeff Hardy’s return to AEW came and went on Dynamite and now, hours later, CM Punk and his possible return seem to have taken center stage, yet again. Fightful is reporting that the working plan has been for Punk to return at the AEW Dynamite from the Wintrust Area on June 21, or sometime around that date. Haus of Wrestling has been able to independently confirm what Fightful is reporting but, much like they are also saying, this is a very tumultuous situation and things can change.
If Punk does return to AEW in that timeframe, it may not come as a surprise. It was noted by Fightful that there have already been pitches about announcing Punk’s impending return at the upcoming Warner Upfronts on May 17. One of the things that will be interesting to watch for, if Punk is coming back, is who he feuds with first. The Second City Saint has reportedly shown a willingness to work with The Elite but it doesn’t sound like the trio has been sold on the idea yet.
One interesting name that appears to be in the mix is Chris Jericho. The two have had their issues in the past and Jericho reportedly called Punk “a cancer” to his face following the AEW All Out incident. Per Fightful’s report, an in-person meeting between Jericho and Punk is planned, possibly about working together. Haus of Wrestling can confirm that there is a meeting between the two being pushed for, or planned, but whether it is about the two men feuding on TV, or something else, like locker room politics if Punk does return, is unclear.
Beyond The Elite and Jericho, there are still a wealth of possible opponents for Punk to work with if he comes back. AEW still has not sent Hook his way and that’s something many have been looking to see since Punk mentioned the young star in a promo early in his run. There’s also AEW World Champion MJF, who currently holds the title Punk was stripped of.
